What is vitamin D3 needed for and what are the risks of its deficiency?

According to statistics, 82% of adults and 92% of children in Ukraine suffer from vitamin D deficiency. The body does not synthesize it on its own; it is produced in the upper layer of the skin under the influence of sunlight, which is why it is called the "sun vitamin." This is the only micronutrient that humans obtain in such an unusual way. What is vitamin D3 for the body and what forms does it have?

The letter D denotes the general name of a group of fat-soluble compounds, which include two main forms: D2 and D3, scientifically known as ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol, respectively. Both forms perform similar functions in the body, participating in the regulation of calcium-phosphorus metabolism, but they have different origins and metabolic differences. Here is how the vitamins differ:

  • D2 is synthesized by plants, fungi, and yeast under ultraviolet light, is less well absorbed by the body, and is excreted faster;
  • D3 is found in animal products and produced under UV rays, is well absorbed and accumulates.

Next, we will consider vitamin D3, the most biologically active and effective form.

Functions and Importance for the Body

Vitamin D3 is an essential component for the health of muscles, teeth, bones, and a crucial part of normal immunity. Its benefit essentially lies in eliminating the harm caused by micronutrient deficiency. According to medical experts, the correct and most general understanding of its benefit is maintaining an adequate level in the body, which results in:

  • normal calcium concentration in the blood, necessary for the formation and strengthening of bone tissue and dental health;
  • good immune and musculoskeletal system function;
  • reduced likelihood of developing autoimmune diseases;
  • healthy muscles with good contractile ability;
  • normal hormonal balance and insulin secretion;
  • reduced risk of developing depression. It has been proven that D3 affects the production of the "feel-good" hormone serotonin;
  • healthy hair;
  • reduced risk of certain types of cancer;
  • satisfactory cardiovascular system condition.

This is not a complete list of processes influenced by vitamin D. More than three thousand are known. The need for it arises in children even in the womb at the cellular level. Vitamin for children is especially necessary during periods of active growth and development.

It is also important for women's health. Adequate amounts improve reproductive function, positively affect hormonal balance, help maintain normal weight, and support the body during pregnancy. A normal level of vitamin D3 in women reduces the risk of developing genital infections.

In men, insufficient cholecalciferol leads to a decrease in sex hormone levels, as the body begins to compensate for calcium deficiency with testosterone.

Vitamin D deficiency leads to the following problems:

  • impaired bone formation, muscle weakness, skeletal deformities in children;
  • bone softening, osteoporosis, frequent fractures in adults;
  • weakened immunity, susceptibility to infections with age;
  • increased risk of cardiovascular diseases;
  • fatigue, depressive states.

It is important to understand the causes of vitamin D deficiency.

What Causes Deficiency?

The majority of the body's vitamin D comes from direct sunlight exposure through the skin. A small amount comes from food, but this is minimal. To meet the daily requirement, one would need to eat 40 egg yolks.

External and internal factors of deficiency include:

  • low insolation. Lack of sunlight is observed in regions with long winters;
  • working indoors, rare time spent outdoors;
  • use of sunscreens that block UV rays necessary for vitamin D synthesis in the skin;
  • covering clothing;
  • poor nutrition;
  • age-related changes;
  • excess weight and obesity;
  • ethnic and genetic characteristics. People with dark skin have reduced synthesis because melanin blocks UV penetration.

To prevent deficiency, it is important to monitor vitamin levels, especially for people at risk, and use supplements containing cholecalciferol if necessary.

Dietary sources include fresh salmon, mackerel, halibut, cod liver, trout, and egg yolks.

How to Take Vitamin D3 Capsules?

Having understood what vitamin D3 is for, what it is responsible for, and why deficiency occurs, it is necessary to normalize its level. The biological activity of the substance is measured in international units (IU). The daily requirement for people aged 18 to 50 is 600 IU, for those older – 50-800 IU, and for pregnant women – 1000 IU. How long to take vitamin D3 and at what dosage are individual questions discussed with a doctor based on blood serum vitamin D level tests.

There are certain diseases for which D is prescribed even without deficiency:

  • hypertension. Taking vitamin D helps reduce the concentration of kidney enzymes that affect blood vessels;
  • osteoporosis. Supplements with cholecalciferol slow disease progression.

D3 is considered a safe component, but dosage violations can sometimes cause toxic effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Today, overdose is extremely rare. A dose of 20,000 IU is usually tolerated without toxic effects.

Vitamin D, especially combined with magnesium, brings many benefits to physical and mental health. If you do not get enough vitamin D from a balanced diet or sun exposure, talk to your doctor about the need for supplements.
